High energy neutrinos from novae in symbiotic binaries: The case of V407 Cygni

2010

Detection of high-energy (>= 100 MeV) gamma rays by the Fermi Large Area Telescope from a nova in the symbiotic binary system V407 Cygni has opened the possibility of high-energy neutrino detection from this type of source. A thermonuclear explosion on the white dwarf surface sets off a nova shell in motion that expands and slows down in a dense surrounding medium provided by the red giant companion. Particles are accelerated in the shocks of the shell and interact with the surrounding medium to produce observed gamma rays. We show that proton-proton interaction, which is most likely responsible for producing gamma rays via neutral pion decay, produces >= 0:1 GeV neutrinos that can be detec…

Lithium in the intermediate age cluster NGC 3680: Following Li evolution along the C-M diagram

2001

We present an analysis of high resolution spectroscopic observations (R 30 000, S=N =6 0 150) of 24 members of the intermediate age (1.5 Gyr) open cluster NGC 3680, covering all regions of the cluster colour-magnitude (C{M) diagram where cluster members are known to exist. These observations represent in many aspects challenges to our understanding of stellar interior and mixing. Four main sequence G stars have, within the errors, the same Li abundance, 0.3 dex lower than similar stars in the1 Gyr younger Hyades but comparable with those observed in the coeval cluster IC 4651. The cluster shows a clear Li-dip located around the turn-o; two stars on the upper part of the turn-o are out of th…

A new species of Ferula (Apiaceae) from Malta

2018

Ferula melitensis, a new species from the Malta Archipelago, is described and illustrated. It belongs to the taxonomic group of F. communis, showing close relationships mainly with F. tunetana, F. arrigonii, F. communis s.str. and F. glauca, from which it differs in several features regarding the stem, leaves (mainly for shape and size of terminal segments), flowers and mericarps; other significant differences regard the ecology and phenology. The investigations, carried out on living plants, herbarium material and literature data, regard the morphological analysis of vegetative and reproductive structures, the anatomy of terminal leaf segments and mericarps, as well as the shape and size o…

A search for diffuse absorption bands in carbon-rich stars -- I. Barium and related stars

2003

The results of a search for interstellar and circumstellar absorption lines in high-resolution optical spectra of seven late-type stars are presented. All these stars are single-lined spectroscopic binaries with unseen companions, presumably white dwarfs. Some residual material indicative of recent mass transfer from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star might still be associated with the systems. Peculiar energy distribution and the sodium D 1 and D 2 lines give direct evidence about the material in the line of sight in some cases. Absorption features of simple carbon-bearing molecules (C 2 , CN) have been detected in most of the examined stars, confirming a carbon-rich nature of the corre…

Collisional picture of quantum optics with giant emitters

2020

The effective description of the weak interaction between an emitter and a bosonic field as a sequence of two-body collisions provides a simple intuitive picture compared to traditional quantum optics methods as well as an effective calculation tool of the joint emitter-field dynamics. Here, this collisional approach is extended to many emitters (atoms or resonators), each generally interacting with the field at many coupling points ("giant" emitter). In the regime of negligible delays, the unitary describing each collision in particular features a contribution of a chiral origin resulting in an effective Hamiltonian. The picture is applied to derive a Lindblad master equation (ME) of a set…

Postmoderni olemisen mieli : tutkielma Gianni Vattimon näkemyksestä taiteen kuoleman kokemisen merkityksestä postmodernissa

2010

Tutkielma Gianni Vattimon näkemyksestä taiteen kuoleman kokemisen merkityksestä postmodernissa Heidi Meltovuo Filosofia Pro gradu-tutkielma Yhteiskuntatieteiden ja filosofian laitos Jyväskylän yliopisto Leena Kakkori Jussi Kotkavirta Kevät 2010 71 sivua Tutkielmani tehtävänä on esitellä Gianni Vattimon teoria taiteen kuoleman kolmen vaiheen leikistä, joka on Vattimon mukaan mahdollisuus taiteen olemassaololle postmodernina aikana. Taiteen kuolemassa taide levittäytyy perinteisten taidehierarkioiden ulkopuolelle, ja taiteen kategoria laajentuu näin ollen uuteen kontekstiin. Tarkastelen myös Vattimon taidefilosofian taustalla vaikuttaneiden filosofien kuten Walter Benjaminin, Friedrich Nietzs…

Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E UrbanaIn 1970 Giuseppe Samonà coordinated a design team (with Vittorio Gregotti Gianni Pirrone and Alberto Samonà) for the project of the Civic Commercial and Cultural Centre of Gibellina Nuova. From this plan among the monuments just the town hall was built. The theatre was proposed later for a different place. The buildings should have been linked to a pedestrian axial gangway connected to an articulated artificial ground. The complex should have shown the unity between architecture and urban planning anticipating in some ways a later Samona’s reflection about the dialectic between urban and rural.
